How we read the rates
Every morning a program visits each exchange office's website and copies the buy and sell rate posted there. We never guess prices. If an office doesn't publish its rate online, we list it without a price so you can call.
Rates older than two days, or far off from the rest of the city, are left out of the ranking. The TRM is Colombia's official rate, published by the Financial Superintendency, and a useful yardstick for judging a rate.
Frequently asked questions
What do buy and sell mean at a Colombian exchange office?
The buy rate (compra) is what the office pays you for your dollars. The sell rate (venta) is what it charges you for dollars. If you arrived with dollars and want pesos, look at the "They pay" column.
Why isn't the rate the same as the official TRM?
The TRM is an average of the previous day's interbank trades. Exchange offices buy below it and sell above it, and the gap is their margin. The smaller the gap, the better for you.
Is the rate the same in every city?
No. Each city has its own market, and Cúcuta, on the Venezuelan border, can differ from the rest of the country. That's why we compare exchange offices within each city.
What do I need to bring?
Your original passport. Exchange offices in Colombia have to record your ID for every transaction.
Should I change money at the airport?
Airport booths often pay less than offices in the city. A common approach is to change only what you need for the taxi and do the rest once you arrive.
How often are rates updated?
Once a day, in the morning. Offices can change their rate during the day, so call ahead before changing a large amount.
